The Next Destination

Learning to sail is a lifelong pursuit. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Mother Nature slams your boat into the dock and your confidence is back down to zero. It never ends for a sailor, once you commit to a life of the sea, your growth as a sailor continues until the last wisps of salty air escape your withering lungs. And it never ever ends.

That's one of the reasons its such a great life pursuit. Because unlike golf or fishing, which have their various personal and professional pinnacles, once you have reached your personal best, there is always the next horizon to sail toward. The irony of living on a round planet is the horizon is not the end or the beginning. Its just the next destination. And sailing is just a means to get to the next destination.

Its also one of the reasons why I teach sailing. I have been told many times that I should pursue a career teaching. Whether it be writing or history or God forbid, calculus or quantum physics, I've been told I am good teacher. But a sailing instructor can't work in a traditional classroom or for that matter hold a 9-5 job or fit into a three piece suit. Our lot finds comfort with the sky as our blackboard and the waves as our text books. The horizon is a great subject of the day, whatever day of the week it might be and we relish a chance to cast our students gaze upon it.

Unfortunately, for too many the horizon is blotted out by the things of man and sailing schools focus on the buoys and the bowlines, instead of the stars and the horizon. For them teaching the 90 percent to sail around three buoys as fast as they can is enough. They take enjoyment from luffing up a competitor on the race course and commit themselves to finishing first and fastest always. The true sailor is neither first nor fastest in most cases and those that appreciate the wind and the journey often times prefer that over the smoke and the gold, as their focus often leads them to tarry at a diming sunset or day dream at the chirping of the osprey. For them it is the entirety of the experience that they go to sea and not the bragging rights at the bar or the yacht club peacocking that appeals to them. And those sailors are the ones I hope to serve with Crystal Coast Marine Consulting.

Perched at the cusp of the the Grave Yard of the North Atlantic, Crystal Coast Marine Consulting sits at the cross roads of the sailing world. In a place carved out by God's hand and time alone, the gulf stream cuts in creating a plentiful supply of warm winds and nutrients that blow across a barrier island and fill a bowl of protected waters connected by a highway of canals that aid the migratory boat traffic up and down the East Coast. Its is a place so suited to life and learning that all manner of God's creatures stop in to raise their young and refuel for their annual migration. The Leatherback Turtle, the mighty Humpback, the Great white shark and the wahoo, marlin and the bluefish,  the Ibis, and every shape, kind and color of waterfowl known to the modern ornithologist can be found here at one time or another. This natural confluence shows it is no coincidence that Humans have also made their annual migration here, some in boats, some in cars, some in planes but all here to enjoy the natural splendor of Eastern Carolina.

And so that is why I have made my home here on the Crystal Coast and why I aim to create an educational resource that will take sailors from the cradle to the grave. Sorry though I don't teach kids anymore, there are plenty who do that. I take adults who want to learn to live the sailing lifestyle. and desire to make their way to the horizon and I work to teach them what I can and bring all the resources I might assemble to aid them in their pursuit of this lifestyle. Whether they have never sailed before, are buying their first boat, or want to make the leap to sailing offshore. Crystal Coast Marine Consulting is dedicated to being a one stop shop for all your boating education needs. We will work with you, to design a personalized sailing education that meets your needs and fulfills your dream to reach that next destination.
